Full transparency: I tend to describe myself as a fashion girl. It’s true that I worked in cute boutiques during my college years and maxed out a few credit cards shopping online, but now that I’m in my 30s, I hardly give much thought to the clothes I wear. As a full-time freelancer who works from home, I tend to grab the nearest clean pair of sweatpants at the start of my workday, or a cute loungewear set if I feel like it.
One of my goals for this year is to change that. I want to rebrand myself and be proud of the outfits I put together – even if my dog is the only audience that day. While I’m on this fashion journey, scrolling Pinterest has become my favorite way to get inspiration. However, I’m a plus-size woman, so it’s probably not surprising that it can be difficult to actually shop many of the looks I see on Pinterest. Although I would happily click on a post and immediately add each item to cart, there is never a guarantee that I will find options in my size.
Staying current with a larger figure isn’t always easy. In years past, this struggle would have damaged my self-esteem and probably even stopped me from completely expanding my wardrobe, but now it’s 2024, baby! I’m tired of worrying about how my stomach looks in a crop top or whether I can “pull off” a miniskirt because of the size of my legs. Every body is a good body, and each of us deserves to wear what makes us feel our best. Instead of giving in to the fear that some of my favorite looks wouldn’t fit my shape well, I decided to do a treasure hunt through some size-inclusive brands and put together versions of five looks that I liked. This is how it went:
I love this outfit as a transitional look from winter to spring. Since it’s still a little too chilly for the “heels-to-thighs-out” look, I added tights and loafers to the look and was so happy with the result. I liked that this skirt is actually a skort, so I’ll still feel comfortable and covered even if I eventually forgo the tights and leave the pant legs exposed instead.
I always appreciate a good blazer and this one fits like a glove. I opted for shorter boots and stuck with the all-black layers underneath for a classic chic look. The blazer is so comfortable and a great piece that you can either wear to the office or pair with casual pants or a crop top if you want to wear it for a night out.
I can’t lie…I felt as cute as a damn button in this outfit. I’ve never really experimented with the trend of wearing long sleeves under dresses (again from Florida), but this shirt and dress were both so light and comfortable that I was hooked. This is another outfit I can see myself wearing for transitional spring weather.
Last but not least, this outfit made me feel like a total villain. I’ve been admiring the faux leather corset top trend from afar until I spotted this brown style in my size and fell in love with it. Of course I paired it with another blazer and these wide leg jeans that are super comfortable but also totally flattering. Win, win.
